Video Transcript – Negative AddictionsDo you have addictions?

Well, often addiction is hiding something. I remember when I first saw a therapist many years ago and the first thing he said to me [was]:“What do you excel in?”

And I said:

“Nothing”

He looked very bewildered. And I said:

“I’m too busy to excel in everything.”

Then he goes:

“Oh, ok..”

So, what he was looking for was to see where do I put all my energy and my focus so that I’m not facing the real problem. And when I said “I’m too busy” it just meant that I was putting my energy and my focus everywhere so as not to come back and focus on my problem.

And people will often put that in drinking, or drugs or obsessive relationships. They are trying to divert or numb out their emotions by having addictions.

So, if you are brave enough, and you decide that you want to change what you are addicted to because it has power over you and you are not in control, then before you have that drink, or before you go to call that person (you might be a codependent person: always needy, always need help), sit in that moment and say:

“What is it that I’m feeling? What is it inside me that’s hurting? What is it that I feel?”

And then connect with that, and if you can, you begin to heal these addictions even of food or drinking. Whatever it is, heal yourself and be in control of your life.

It is a journey, a process, but if you can do that, then you will feel proud, powerful and you will be able to go forward in a much happier, healthier way. Because addictions, negative addictions aren’t healthy.

So, I challenge you to begin.

And is it coffee – mine was coffee – that’s all I had left because I don’t drink, and I don’t go out and do any of that, but I did like a cup of coffee. It’s a negative addiction, and I don’t like it, I want to be calm. And so I started to look at it, and I started to say:

“What is it that it’s doing for me?”

And then it slowly faded away. And I look at it as something toxic, so I’m saying to myself: “Do I wanna drink toxic?” And I say “No”. It’s no longer an addiction.

So, find out what yours are and improve your life.
