Ever wondered how you could assist someone you know who is in pain or feeling stressed? It can feel disempowering if you have a sick child or a loved one who is suffering. You may feel your only options are to rely on another person or medications to help them. Rest assured – there is a remedy you can apply immediately while help is on its way.
Your hands can heal
Every person can heal others with their hands. I can recall an occasion in Italy after I joined the Mormon Church. I was spending time with the missionaries at their social events. This is where I met the Mission President’s wife who offered me her hand. When she touched my hand, I felt warmth, love and healing energy transfer to me.
It had a profound effect and changed me for the better. The feeling of love and warmth lingered with me for hours and brought peace to my soul. Even though I am no longer a Mormon, it’s a moment I still treasure.
Children deprived of human touch
Many studies demonstrate human interaction and touch is pivotal for the overall healthy development of children. Rene Spitz born in Vienna, Austria was one of the first researchers who used direct child observation as an experimental method, and in 1935 he began research in the area of child development.
Spitz investigated hospitalism in children in a foundling home where children deprived of daily human interaction and touch. He discovered that the developmental imbalance caused by the lack of human interaction in a child’s first year, produced irreparable, psychosomatic damage and sometimes death.
People need touch
Spitz was perplexed as to the reason the infants under his care were dying, despite being given the proper nutrition and sterile surroundings. Decades prior, reports had surfaced of babies dying in orphanages in the U.S. for inexplicable reasons. These incidents triggered extensive studies that later gave birth to American psychologist Harry Harlow’s verdict: The babies died from lack of touch.
There is enough evidence to support the notion that loving human touch is a basic necessity to live a normal functioning life. It’s equivalent to needing air to breathe, and its healing effects should not be underestimated.
Some time ago I produced a video of my cat Warnie to demonstrate the positive and calming effects on an animal who received only love and nurturing. Many people commented they thought Warnie was so chilled out he must have been sedated … rest assured my cats are drug-free!! But they demonstrate an important point about how, humans too – with love, kindness, and healing touch – can experience the same soothing effects and have their pain eased.
Use your gift
Receiving a loving touch or kindness is key to having a healthy life, especially when it begins in childhood. Your hands can touch people in ways that heal. With them, you can connect and heal others even if you are not a healer or therapist. Here are some ideas on how to heal others with simple everyday gestures:
- A loving hug
- A helping hand
- A stroke on the head
- A touch of the cheek
- A pat on the back
- A handshake
- A squeeze of the hand
- An arm around the shoulder
How to Use your Hands to Heal using Intention
You can use your hands to heal someone’s pain or alleviate their anxiety by merely placing your hands over their pain or heart with the intention to heal them. Visualise the result of the person already healed as you put your hands over their pain or heart for around 2-3 minutes.
When you do this, you will feel the warmth through your hands as the energy travels to the person you are touching. The healing can be a sacred moment as the receiver allows themselves to be vulnerable for you to apply the healing energy.
This healing affects both receiver and giver. Sending love and kindness to others not only accumulates in their energy field but yours as well. The process attracts more understanding, compassion, support, and healing to everyone involved.
Blessing Others Blesses You
Be proactive with your hands. Use them for good. Many lonely souls are waiting to be touched who endured a childhood void of love or kindness. They still bear the scars and suffer internally from the pain. There are also many people in need of a friendly, loving hand to get them through their hardships or for someone to simply acknowledge them. You could be this person… reach out and touch someone’s life as your kindness will be returned to you when you are in need.
